What Are Some Notable Ginkgo Studies?

A study conducted in 2005 on healthy younger volunteers concluded that Ginko biloba has been shown to improve attention and memory. The study was conducted to compare the effects of ginkgo after and acute and chronic treatment on tests of attention and memory. The study used a placebo controlled double blind design format and consisted of two experiments. In the first experiment researchers gave 26 students a 120mg dose while 26 were given a placebo. Tests were performed 4 hours later. In the second experiment 20 students were given the 120mg dose for 6 weeks while 20 were given the placebo. In both experiments the participants were tested for sustained attention, episodic and working memory, mental flexibility and planning, and completed mood rating scales. The results concluded that the single 120mg dose of ginkgo significantly improved performance on the sustained attention tasks and pattern-recognition memory. [3]

A second, similar study used doses of 240mg and 360mg along with a dose of 120mg. Cognitive performance was assessed using CDR computerized test battery immediately prior to the dosage and at hours 1, 2.5, 4, and 6. Those administered the ginkgo produced a number of positive changes in performance. The most notable changes occurred with the “speed of attention” factor. The end conclusion was the Ginkgo biloba is capable of producing sustained improvement in the attention of young, healthy volunteers. [7]
