What is Galantamine?

Galantamine is an alkaloid that can be created synthetically or extracted from the flowers of Galanthus Caucasius. The first process to create synthetic Galantamine was developed in Bulgaria in 1959 and the supplement was titled Nivalin. It has since been used for decades in Europe for the treatment of various conditions such as myasthenia, myopathy, and sensory/motor dysfunction.

How Does Galantamine Work?

Galantamine inhibits the effects of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). When AChE is inhibited, acetylcholine cannot be broken down as fast causing acetylcholine levels in the brain to rise. [1] Acetylcholine is the only neurotransmitter used in the motor division of the somatic nervous system. It plays a very important role in our ability to sustain attention, consolidate memory, and our ability to learn. This gives Galantamine many properties similar to that of Huperzia-A and Choline supplements.

Galantamine Benefits

  • Improves memory, attention, and learning [4][5][2]
  • Taken to increase odds of lucid dreaming or out-of-body experiences [6][7]
  • Sleep aid that may help one fall asleep and increase their quality of sleep

Should I Take Galantamine?

If you are strictly looking for a nootropic to boost your cognitive functions such as memory and learning then you should steer clear of Galantamine.  Its long half-life will cause you to build a tolerance if taken daily causing it to ultimately be ineffective. A good substitute for Galantamine if you are looking for an AChE inhibitor would be Huperzine.

Even though Galantamine may not be the best drug for pure nootropic benefits it does have a very specific use. If you are interested in lucid dreaming or even want more vivid dreams then Galantamine is something you should strongly consider.  Just taking it by itself will not magically make your dreams lucid. Lucid dreaming is a technique that requires effort to learn.  If you have had lucid dreams in the past or are making an honest attempt to have them then Galantamine will help.

Galantamine Dosage Information

Dosages for Galantamine depend on what you want to use it for. To induce lucid dreaming, a dose of 4 – 8mg should be taken after 5-6 hours of deep sleep. This small dose helps throw you directly into deep sleep which greatly increases you chance of lucid dreaming. Because Galantamine stays in your body for up to 48 hours, it is recommended that you space out your dosages so that your body does not quickly build a tolerance.

If you are not taking Galantamine to induce lucid dreaming a dose ranging from 4-12mg should be taken twice daily. It is recommended that anyone does not exceed 24mg in a single day.

Safety and Side Effects of Galantamine

Even though Galantamine is regarded as being very safe, though rare, allergic reactions may occur that may require medical attention. People allergic to daffodil plants may also be allergic to Galantamine.

Some common side effects include loss of appetite, nausea, tiredness, dizziness, and headaches. You should seek medical attention if you experience any severe allergic reactions including skin reactions such as rashes, hives. Other allergic reactions include bloody or black stools and swelling of the mouth, lips, or tongue.

Galantamine should not be taken with other cholinergic inhibitors such as Huperzine-A. [3]

Galantamine Studies

One interesting paper published by Thomas Yuschak provides insight into lucid dreaming and lists some supplements that can help those trying to achieve it. The paper states that Galantamine reduces REM latency and increases REM density, as well as helping people remember their dreams. It states that one’s chances of achieving lucid dreaming are best achieved when one enters REM sleep directly from a waking state. This is why it is suggested that you take a small dose of Galantamine after being asleep for 4-5 hours. Read the entire paper here[6]
