Scientific figures from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in the US have had a very interesting study, which showed that the memory of the human brain is ten times greater than previously thought, according to news agency "Date" with reference to the Informing .
Scientists have noticed that some nerve cells are connected not one, but several synapses - nerve endings. It is estimated that ten percent of the synapses are duplicated. This means that they transmit two copies of the same signal. The researchers counted the number of synapses of different sizes on each nerve cell in the hippocampus and calculated the actual volume of human memory.
"It's a bomb in the area of neuroscience," says Terry Sejnowski from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies (Salk Institute for Biological Studies). Our new measurement of the brain's memory capacity increases its previous estimate of 10 times. This, at least, the information petabytes (1,024 terabytes or 1,048,576 gigabytes).
Numbers of this order operate on the World Wide Web. For example:
- Google processes about 24 petabytes of data every day.
- August 4, 2014 for download via the tracker Rutracker.org was available about 2,562 petabytes of data
- In 2009, representatives of the company Blizzard talked about the resources spent on the servers online game World of Warcraft: 75,000 processors; 1.3 petabytes of disk space;
- the size of the results of experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider for the year, up to 4 petabytes
"We were amazed to find that the difference in the size of pairs of synapses was very small, on average, only about 8 percent differed in size" said Tom Bartol, one of the scientists. No one thought that the difference is so noticeable. It's a real trick of nature."
Opening of the size differences synapses 8 percent indicates that there may be 26 size categories synapses. Previously it was thought that only a few of these categories. According to the researchers this is an additional complication in the synaptic size leads to a huge increase in the carrying capacity of the brain's memory.
Calculations researchers also showed that the synapses can vary in size every 2 to 20 minutes in accordance with neural transmission. Scientists believe that this discovery could help in the design of an ultra-energy-efficient computers.
